Why does disarmament matter?

Disarmament has been at the heart of the United Nations system of collective security since its foundation. The very first General Assembly resolution in 1946 called for the elimination of atomic and other weapons of mass destruction. Measures for disarmament are pursued for many reasons, including to maintain international peace and security, uphold the principles of humanity, foster confidence and trustamong States, and prevent and end armed conflict. Disarmament and arms control measures also contribute to the realization of broader agendas and frameworks, including the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
